Applying for your Residencia

Applying for your Residents Permit is not obligatory but it is useful to have.

Although it is no longer obligatory to apply for a residence permit, the card is useful to have. For example, it is used for identification purposes (such as when using credit cards) and saves the need to carry a passport.

If you tell your bank that you have Residencia then you will not pay charges on your bank accounts. It also means that you don't pay Capital Gains Tax if you sell your property. If you do decide to sell your property it is also easier to take your money out of the country if returning to the UK or other home country.

Pensioners holding a confirmed Residencia and who join the Pensionista Club are also entitled to the same benefits as Spanish Nationals, such as reduced rail and bus fares and reduced cost holidays in hotels.

The Residencia Card is valid for five years and must then be renewed.

The Tarjeta de Residencia contains the following information

1 an NIE (Numero de Identification de Extranjeros - a fiscal number that identifies you to the Spanish tax authorities. This number is needed to open a bank account, purchase a property etc)
2 personal details
3 your photograph
4 your fingerprint

Applications for a residence card are made at the local police station or "oficina de extranjeros". Each office processes its own applications locally and so the time for the application to be processed can vary from office to office. The process for the Tarjeta de Residencia can take up to eight weeks and will require three visits in total to the office.

You will need the following documentation

1 completed application form called a Solicitud de Tarjeta en Regimen Comunitario (it is in triplicate)
2 Certifica de Empadronamiento (which proves that you are on the Electoral Register)
3 four photographs
4 passport plus photocopy

You could ask a Gestor to help you with the Application process who will make a charge for his services. If buying a property through Rest Assured Properties SL, we will assist you with the application process at no extra charge.
