Although it is no longer obligatory to apply for a residence permit, the card is useful to have. For example, it is used for
identification purposes (such as when using credit cards) and saves the
need to carry a passport.
If you tell your bank that you have Residencia then you will not pay
charges on your bank accounts. It also means that you don't pay Capital Gains
Tax if you sell your property. If you do decide to sell your property it
is also easier to take your money out of the country if returning to the
UK or other home country.
Pensioners holding a confirmed Residencia and who join the
Pensionista Club are also entitled to the same benefits as Spanish
Nationals, such as reduced rail and bus fares and reduced cost holidays
in hotels.
The Residencia Card is valid for five years and must then be renewed.
