The Spanish NIE is the identification number for foreigners, and is
necessary when buying property in Spain, or making any other
financial transaction such as opening a bank account.

When buying a property in Spain or making any other financial
transaction, including opening a bank account, Spanish law
requires you to apply for an NIE (Numero de Identidad de Extranjero - an
Identification Number for Foreigners).
Until recently the NIE was a plastic card but today the NIE is just a
piece of paper with your name and number. And in the past, a legal
representative could obtain an NIE for you - but recent changes in the
law in Spain has made it necessary for all applications to be made in
person.
If you are applying for an NIE whilst in Spain, you must make your application at
your nearest Immigration Office (Officinas de Extranjeros) which are located
within National Police Stations (Comisaria de Policia).
The following documents are required:
The completed Application Form plus two further copies
Passport plus one copy (of the page that includes photograph)
2 recent passport sized photographs

1. Applying to Madrid
You can also apply for an NIE whilst outside of Spain. Applications
should be made to The Central Police Headquarters in Madrid.
All documents, together with the appropriate fee made payable to "The
Spanish Consulate General" should be sent to:

2. Applying to The Spanish Consulate in your home country
Applications can also be made to The Spanish Consulate in your home
country.
You will need these following documents |

| 1 | Stamped (also at the consulate) photocopy of your passport |
| 2 | 2 recent passport size photos. The background must be plain, and people who wear glasses and/or earrings must take them off for the photo |
| 3 | Original copy plus a photocopy of a document which explains why you need your NIE. This can be the private sales contract you have signed with the estate agent, promoter or private vendor, a job offer etc |
| 4 | A self-addressed envelope |
| 5 | An envelope large enough to contain all the above documents plus the NIE application form addressed to The Central Police Headquarters in Madrid |
You will need to take all completed forms and appropriate fee to the
Consulate. You will be asked to sign the form in front of a consulate
employee, and it will then be officially stamped and forwarded to
Madrid. You will have to wait for the NIE to be returned to you.
