Spanish Law requires you to apply

Spanish law requires you to apply for an NIE when buying property or making any financial transaction.

When buying a property in Spain or making any other financial transaction, including opening a bank account, Spanish law requires you to apply for an NIE (Numero de Identidad de Extranjero - an Identification Number for Foreigners).

Until recently the NIE was a plastic card but today the NIE is just a piece of paper with your name and number. And in the past, a legal representative could obtain an NIE for you - but recent changes in the law in Spain has made it necessary for all applications to be made in person.
