Murcia is a paradise for bird watching, walking, photography and artwork. And good food and wine can be found in the local bars, restaurants and bodegas (wine cellar). Many of these bodegas are steeped in hundreds of years of tradition and give a real insight into a way of life that has changed little over the past years.
For the more adventurous there is an wide choice of sports and activities for you to participate in. The area will soon become a golfers' paradise. The golf courses of Alicante are only a 30 to 40 minutes drive away but soon there will be two 18-hole golf courses at the prestigious Santa Ana del Monte Golf Resort and another 9-hole golf course at the outstanding El Castillo Golf Resort in Jumilla. Both these golf resorts are in construction and due for completion soon.
The area is very popular with cyclists. The road network is
excellent with little traffic, and wind in and out of the most beautiful
mountain ranges. International cycling races (Vuelta de Murcia and The
Vuelta de Alicante) take place during springtime and there are others throughout the year.
Or you have the choice of hiking, pony-trekking, mountain biking, mountaineering,
rock-climbing, cave diving, deep-sea diving, paragliding, hang-gliding
and potholing routes through caves of exceptional interest.
In Blanca you can enjoy exhilarating water-rafting and gorge walking
and punting.
There are many riding stables in the area with pure Hispanic and
Hispanic-Arab horses - you can even hire a guide to take you across the
sierras on a two night's trip away!
If you want to spend a lazy day at the beach, the beaches of the Costa Blanca are only a 45-minute drive away - or the more energetic, the theme parks of Benidorm are just over an hours drive. A slightly longer drive of about 75 minutes and you will reach the quieter Costa Calida and Mar Menor - where you can enjoy a mud bath, scuba diving or kite boarding.
The region is renowned for its many fiestas, and throughout the year you can attend and join in a plethora of magnificent events, such as these:
The Easter Week festivals
Spring Festival - ending in the spectacular Burning of the Sardine
The impressive Romans and Carthaginians pageants
